YouTube String Tutorials

Availability of High-Quality YouTube String Tutorials

Teachers were asked if they thought there are adequate resources available on YouTube for advanced students.  100% of teachers replied that listening to repertoire via YouTube or other means is somewhat to critically important.  No teacher believed that students should be encouraged to learn new material without having heard it before.  Most respondents were uncertain about whether or not quality YouTube tutorials exist for advanced string students.  They agreed that currently available tutorials do not generally include enough detail about specifically how to practice.  Most also agreed that if high-quality YouTube tutorials were to be made available for advanced repertoire, they would use them for their own playing and/or recommend them to their students.

There is clearly a need for high-quality string tutorials, and YouTube is an ideal platform for such lessons because it is widely available and free.  Antonio Lysy has created a series of tutorials for the Bach Cello Suites that will benefit all string players.  His monumental work is showcased in the previous blog post on this website.  We hope you make use of this amazing resource from modern master Antonio Lysy!

“There can never be too many resources/tutorials to augment the students acquisition of skills.”

“My recommendation of YouTube string tutorials depends on the individual student, their current level of playing, and what they need. As an example, I would be mindful of what a beginning student watches on Youtube, especially if it’s pieces they’re working on. Some videos aren’t so good and it can lead to the formation of bad habits. For an advanced student, it’s a great resource for various interpretations, along with the visual and audio.”
